Terms of Service

By creating an account or using Lichen Trail (the “Service”), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

Lichen Trail is a community mapping tool that lets neighbors share trails, points of interest, plant sightings, routes, annotations, and bulletin posts. The Service is provided free of charge and is offered as-is, without warranties of any kind.

You're responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide and for maintaining the security of your account. You must be at least 13 years old to use Lichen Trail. You're responsible for all activity that happens under your account.

You retain ownership of the content you post — text, photos, GPS tracks, and other contributions. By posting content, you grant Lichen Trail a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, display, and distribute your content within the Service so that other users of the Service can view it.

You're responsible for the content you post. Don't post anything you don't have the right to share.

You agree not to:

• Post content that's illegal, harassing, defamatory, hateful, or that infringes someone else's rights.
• Post private locations (homes, addresses) of other people without their permission.
• Attempt to access, tamper with, or use non-public areas of the Service or other users' accounts.
• Use the Service to send spam, malware, or otherwise interfere with its operation.
• Scrape, copy, or redistribute Service data in bulk without permission.

We may remove content or suspend accounts that violate these terms.

Trail data, routes, elevation, weather, and plant identifications shown in Lichen Trail are community-contributed or sourced from third parties. They may be inaccurate, outdated, or incomplete. Always use independent judgment, prepare appropriately, and consult official sources before relying on any information from Lichen Trail for outdoor activities or plant safety. You use the Service at your own risk.

Lichen Trail uses third-party providers (Google for sign-in, Supabase for storage, Vercel for hosting, PostHog for analytics, and various map and data providers). Your use of those services through Lichen Trail is also governed by their respective terms.

The Lichen Trail name, logo, and software are owned by the project maintainers. Map tiles and elevation/weather data are provided by their respective copyright holders and remain their property.

You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access to the Service for any user who violates these terms or whose behavior risks harm to others or to the Service. Provisions that should survive termination (ownership, warranty disclaimers, limitation of liability) will continue to apply.

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or accurate.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lichen Trail and its maintainers are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, revenue, or profits arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service.

We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the Service after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
